Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, garlic, onion powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix gently and form into golf ball-sized meatballs.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, add olive oil and butter. Once melted, add sliced onions and sugar. Cook slowly until golden brown (15-20 minutes).
  3. Push the onions to one side of the skillet and add meatballs. Brown on all sides for about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle flour over onions; stir well. Gradually pour in beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Bring to a simmer before adding browned meatballs back into the skillet.
  5. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Sprinkle cheese over the mixture and bake for about 15 minutes until bubbly and golden.
  6. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve with crusty bread or pasta.
