  • 1 tbsp vanilla
  • 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 9 tbsp unsalted butter (for caramel sauce)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar (for caramel sauce)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla (for caramel sauce)
  • 1/4 tsp salt (for caramel sauce)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, cold
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Melt unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat until golden brown, then set aside.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In another bowl, cream together granulated sugar, brown sugar, and brown butter until fluffy.
  5. Add eggs and vanilla to the sugar mixture; mix well.
  6. Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk into the wet mixture until just combined.
  7. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for about 36 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. For the caramel sauce, melt butter in a saucepan and stir in brown sugar; add heavy cream and simmer until thickened.
  9. Frost cooled cake layers with cream cheese frosting and drizzle with caramel sauce.
